“Participating in Ireland’s Smart Energy Future” – Energy Needs Ireland 2013

Energy Needs Ireland (ENI) started in 2007 as an interdisciplinary summer education & research programme which is based in the Electricity Research Centre (ERC) in University College Dublin (UCD), Co. Dublin.

In alternate summers since 2007, different ENI cohorts have engaged in diverse activities, such as creating materials to educate the general population regarding Ireland’s energy needs and usage, writing a response to the Government’s Energy White Paper and presenting at Science Week and the BT Young Scientist Exhibition.

The 2013 ENI group is collaborating with the “Smart Grid Innovation Hub”. The Smart Grid Innovation Hub is a collaborative initiative by EirGrid Group and NDRC (National Digital Research Centre) to promote the development of innovative Smart Grid solutions, with a focus on entrepreneurial initiatives by companies, academics and entrepreneurs in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The group consists of 21 undergraduate students from universities throughout Ireland who are spending the summer of 2013 working on the technical, business and social aspects of projects that are related to the “Smart Grid”. The group will make unbiased findings on their views of the future for these projects. The group intend to obtain the information they need to make these findings through market research, public events, tests & trials and existing studies which have been carried out in the market.

This project is conducted with the financial support of Science Foundation Ireland under Grant Number SFI/09/SRC/E1780 and the Electricity Research Centre (ERC), and hosted in the ERC in University College Dublin in collaboration with the Smart Grid Innovation Hub.
